Addiction Prevention Through Education Is Our Goal Most parents do not realize that crystal methamphetamine is the most popular drug on the market today. Sudafed can be purchased at the corner drugstore, along with a couple of other ingredients from a health food store, and made into the most dangerous drug we have ever known. The reason for its popularity is that it produces a much more pleasurable, longer lasting effect than cocaine, it is easily purchased (legally) and very inexpensive. Any middle school child can buy it and make it in his home. Regulating the sale of Sudafed or even trying to ban the product would be a monumental task and very likely an unobtainable goal. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Drug Abuse Warning Network reports that from 1991 to 1994, the number of methamphetamine-related visits to hospital emergency departments more than tripled, from 4,887 to 17,397. The only workable solution to this problem at this time lies in educating parents and grandparents about the dangers of crystal methamphetamine so that they can influence their children and grandchildren to avoid this plague. One of the most effective ways of reaching this audience is by means of public service announcements on television. While the air time for these messages will be free, production and post-production costs to produce them for broadcast are rather high.
