Addiction Prevention Through Education Is Our Goal

A letter from the President of COAAR

My wife’s death from Ovarian Cancer in 1990 threw my thirty-six year old daughter into binge drinking for the next three years. After entering three different Recovery Centers she still continued to drink and took her own life to end her pain.

My decision to dedicate the rest of my life to educating children of the dangers of drugs and alcohol lead to the formation of a Corporation for awareness about addiction in 2003.

As the years went by my son, Steven separated from his wife and his youngest son. Sean was becoming a problem, missing school, not coming home until the wee hours of the morning, not working, always borrowing money, etc. My son made the decision to have my Grandson move into his house in an effort to help him get his life straightened out. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The boy started to drink heavily and on March 5, 2007 passed away another victim of alcoholism.

My dedication to education of children at risk has not diminished. In fact, it has increased.

COAAR (Children of Alcoholics at Risk) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose goal is the prevention of Addiction through education at an early age here in the community of La Quinta, California.

Problem:
Somewhere between the ages of seven to twelve most children experience a situation in which they will drink alcohol or use drugs. If that drink makes them feel immeasurably better about themselves and or their surroundings, they will very likely seek out more alcohol or some other substance to continue that seductive, illusionary feeling of well being.

The most sensible long term solution to this problem is early prevention - accomplished through education, positive role modeling and counseling - especially with our youth, the most vulnerable group for the onset of the disease of addiction. Some say the children of alcoholics have a fifty-fifty probability of becoming addicts. Others say it is as high as a seventy percent chance.

Mission Statement:
To provide a safe environment for children of alcoholics and drug addicts through counseling and education to achieve healthy and responsible individuals.

All organizations, regardless of the nobility of their purpose or the worthiness of their programs need financial assistance to achieve their purpose and execute their programs. COAAR is no exception.
