Recovering The Lost Self
Should one of them get caught up in using alcohol/drugs to an excess, they become emotionally stunted and display child-like behavior. We become alarmed and start trying to fix the situation by punishment, i.e., “You are grounded. You may not take the car until you learn how to act responsibly.” When that doesn’t work, we try rewards. “If you show me you can act responsibly, I will buy you a car.” Often, we go into denial and pretend things are not as bad as we think. At times, we even think we might be imagining things that are not true. Jim Shelton has been a Family Counselor and active in the recovery field for more than 20 years as Counselor, Case Manager, Program Director and Family Counselor. His presentation, “Recovering The Lost Self - Denial & Co-dependency" will clearly describe the events leading up to addiction in the family. Click here to view a clip from this video |
